Project budgets are optional. By default, reaching a project budget does not pause the app. A project without a budget uses Continue, and setting a budget through CLI or MCP also defaults to Continue. To pause the app at the threshold, the workspace Owner must explicitly select Stop at limit. All projects still draw from the shared workspace credit balance. A project budget does not reserve a separate wallet or add credits.

Read or set a budget

Read the current budget before changing it:

Omitting --mode also selects continue. MCP project_budget_set has the same default; the REST budget endpoint requires an explicit mode.

Opt in to stopping at the limit

Only choose this when you want the project to pause instead of continuing to use workspace credits:
In Stop mode, a new billable operation is rejected with project_budget_exceeded if measured usage, open reservations and its new reservation would exceed the budget. When measured usage plus open reservations reach the limit, Dev and Prod answer HTTP 402 Project execution paused. Raise or remove the limit, switch to Continue, or wait for the next UTC month; serving resumes within about five minutes once admission allows it again. Existing work and delayed measurements may settle later, so Stop is not a guarantee that final costs cannot exceed the limit.

Remove a budget

Removing a budget restores Continue. --credits none cannot be combined with --mode stop. Each intentional change gets its own retained key; repeat an uncertain request with the original arguments/key. Budgets use UTC calendar months, and changing a budget does not reset measured usage.

Use the portal

Open the portal and press $ on the project card to open Usage & limits. Enter a monthly limit in credits, choose Stop at limit or Keep running and save; an empty limit removes it. Only the workspace Owner sees these controls. Read the result back; the portal uses the same endpoint and authorization as CLI/MCP.

Workspace credits running out

An exhausted workspace balance is separate from a project budget. New builds still need enough available credits; existing services have the seven-day credit grace period. Continue does not make hosting unlimited or bypass credit exhaustion. An explicitly enabled Stop budget can pause the project before that grace period ends. Measured usage · Usage and budgets Skill.
